FROM STAFF REPORTS - Thousands paid their last respects Saturday to Dr. Zachery Tims, Jr. during a nearly four-hour service that at times turned into a high-energy praise and worship service.
They cried, sang, laughed, clapped and praised God as local and national church leaders along with elected officials paid tribute to the founder and senior pastor of New Destiny Christian Center in Apopka, a predominantly Black megachurch in Central Florida.

Tims, who led the more than 7,000-member New Destiny, was found dead on Aug. 12 in a New York hotel. He was 42. The cause of his death is still being investigated by New York police.
Hours before the 11 a.m. service Saturday, there was a line of mourners snaked from the front doors of First Baptist Church of Orlando to the parking lot.
Bishop T.D. Jakes, pastor of the Potter’s House in Texas, preached the eulogy, delivering a fiery sermon about Tims, whom he said called upon him often for spiritual advice.
“I knew him more as Zach,” the renowned bishop said, adding how Tims traveled with him during Jakes’ “He-Motions men’s tour’’ about 10 years ago.
“He just had this grace and charisma,’’ Jakes said in describing Tims’ personality. “What an incredible individual.’’ Jakes also referred to the challenges Tims faced as a leader and pastor and a man who had been “deeply broken’’ by circumstances in his past.
“The greater the light, the greater the heat. … If you stand in the light long enough, the light burns…. His death is a wake-up call for all of the clergy to slow down. You’re moving too fast,” Jakes preached.
He later noted: “I don't know what happened in that (hotel) room… but it was Zach who died and Dr. Tims who stood up.’’
Pastor Paula White of Without Walls International Church in Tampa said Tims called her his spiritual mother.
White told how a few weeks ago Tims had spoke of death by saying: “If I die and I don’t want to die, I want you to know I’m saved and going to heaven.’’
Pastor Riva Tims, ex-wife of Dr. Zachery Tims, and the mother of his four children, also spoke about how much Tims had accomplished in 42 years. “Let us never forget what he accomplished,’’ she told mourners.
Soloists included gospel artist Pastor Marvin Sapp, who performed one of his most popular songs, “He Saw the Best in Me.’’
Civic tributes were made by Congresswoman Corrine Brown of Florida along with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Orange County Commissioner Tiffany Moore Russell.
The Rev. R. Lockett of Bethany Christian Discipleship Church of Tampa, who is in his 30s, told the Florida Courier after the funeral that he also was impressed with Tims’ accomplishments.
“God is so awesome that he gave us a Zachery Tims… I thought that at age 42, he was really gone too soon. We say gone too soon, but we know it’s right on time with God,’’ Lockett said. “From what he accomplished from a pastoral perspective, it’s amazing.’’
Interment was at Woodlawn Memorial Park near Orlando.
“People behind me began to cry and cry out, ‘My pastor is gone, my pastor is gone,’’’ recalled Lockett about the scene at the burial site. “I was overcome. The combination of hearing that and being a senior pastor, that’s what got me.’’
Dr. Zachery Tims, Jr. is survived by his children, Zoelle, Zachery III, Zahria and Zion; his mother, Madeline Tims; his grandmother, Eleanor Grant; and a host of other relatives.
A Dr. Zachery Tims, Jr. Children’s Trust has been set up at Bank of America.

#9 Dr.Mary Kinder 2011-08-24 13:30 This opportunity is for the believers all over the world. Its' not our call to decredit our brother when we don't have all the facts. But it is our responsiblity to pray for the ones that is still alive and questioning their faith. Believers, please don't look at the media because of what they assume about our brother. However; pray for the Church to keep Faith alive and don't stop striving to acheive the promise of Eternal Life with God. Stay real.. By keeping it real because we haven't acheived perfection yet.. Please don't stop trying to acheive it. May God keep you in this unmoral world. Quote
