DeLand, Fla. – Stetson University will mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with an interfaith service, a concert centered on peace and innocence and the first Into the Streets community service day of the fall semester.

Both the interfaith service and the concert are open to the public, while the Into the Streets service event is geared toward Stetson students, faculty and staff.

At 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, Stetson Chaplain Michael Fronk and Stetson students will lead a service in the Lee Chapel of Elizabeth Hall, 421 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand. The reflective service will include live music, interfaith prayers and readings. It is free and open to the public.

At 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, Stetson School of Music faculty soprano Lloyd Linney and Steinway Piano artist Michael Rickman will perform in a concert geared for families and children. The recital will be held at Lee Chapel inside Elizabeth Hall, 421 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand. Admission is $10 for the general public; $8 for senior citizens; $5 for area students; and free for children ages 12 and under.

The Sept. 11 recital is a special concert for children as well as adults to introduce some of the selections on Linney’s newly released CD, “Treasured Memories.” Her CD is a collection of songs for and about children, including art songs and folk song arrangements, nursery rhymes, duets from “Hansel and Gretel”, and children’s hymns, prayers, and lullabies. The concert will also feature two more of Stetson’s own – mezzo-soprano Jane Christeson and flutist Jean Ohlsson West, dean of the School of Music, who will perform two sets of variations on the familiar “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” melody, in duet with Rickman on piano. “Treasured Memories” will be available for purchase at the recital.

“Though there will be no mention of 9-11 during this recital, it is important to recognize that as we continue to move forward, peace and innocence are what we hope for in every child's life,” said Dean of the School ofMusic Dr. Jean West. “So we present this music in that spirit.”

Not open to the public, but an important part of Stetson’s commemoration of the Sept. 11 anniversary, is the Friday, Sept. 9, Into the Streets event. Into the Streets is one way Stetson students, faculty and staff engage in the local community – by volunteering with one of Stetson’s non-profit community partners. Each Into the Streets event lasts two hours, with students and employees heading off-campus for their choice of several projects. Three such community outreach afternoons are planned this fall, beginning on Sept. 9.
