Karen Sutherland’s ‘Birthday Bash in the Bahamas,’ 12-2 to 12-4, 2011 (115)

Well-wishers from Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York, Oklahoma, and various islands of the Bahamas descended on Nassau, Bahamas and the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island to help Karen Sutherland celebrate her birthday. Karen is Senior Director of Training & Development/Human Resources at Atlantis.

The party started with a blast on Friday with a “fantastic voyage” aboard the M/Y Carrousel with everyone wearing black or white. From there, the action moved to the Atlantis casino. After a leisurely Saturday in 75-degree weather, the group hung out with the Marina Village Junkanoo Band, then adjourned to witness entertainer “Big, Black and Sexy” do his thing.

By Sunday afternoon, Dec. 4, many of the partiers were back at their respective cold-climate destinations.

NNPA 2011 National Convention, Chicago, IL, 6-25-11 (Day Three) (51)

The third day of the NNPA Annual Convention opened with a publishers' roundtable convened by NNPA Chairman Danny Bakewell, Sr. General matters relating to the organization were discussed and incoming national officers and board members were sworn in. Bakewell received a standing ovation from the assembled publishers. He then formally turned the 'reins' of NNPA over to incoming Chairman Cloves Campbell, Jr., publisher of the Arizona Informant.

The convention ended with an evening/nighttime boat ride down the Chicago River and into Lake Michigan on Chicago's First Lady, sponsored by GM. NNPA members and their guest kept the party rocking as they watched a fireworks display over the water.

NNPA 2011 National Convention, Chicago, IL, 6-24-11 (Day Two) (59)

The second day of the NNPA Annual Convention began with a breakfast sponsored by Neilsen featuring an inspirational address from the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., and attended by professor and radio talk show host Michael Eric Dyson and his wife, the Rev. Marcia Dyson; Afrocentric philosopher Dr. Maulana Karenga, who originated the celebration of Kwanzaa; activist and university professor Dr. Cornel West; civil rights activist Ben Chavis; and the Rev. Eugene Rivers, a Boston-area pastor and MSNBC commentator.

A corporate partners forum followed, hosted by NNPA Chairman Danny Bakewell, Sr. with panelists Chuck Morrison representing Ford; Jocelyn K. Allen representing GM; Cheryl Pearson-McNeil representing Neilsen; and Michelle Thornhill representing Wells Fargo.

Lunch was served during a brief speech by the Rev. Al Sharpton with civil rights activist Martin Luther King III, media commentator Roland Martin, Chavis, the Dysons, Dr. Karenga, the Rev. Jackson, and Dr. West all in attendance and seated at the same table. Immediately thereafter, journalist George Curry hosted a spirited but cordial conversation between Dr. West and the Rev. Sharpton that briefly addressed their recent televised disagreement about the policies of the Obama administration, among other issues.

Later, Harvard Law School Professor Charles J. Ogletree facilitated a National Leaders Forum with Dr. Chavis, the Dysons, the Rev. Jackson, Dr. Karenga, and Dr. West.

Day Three ended with the Legacy of Excellence Dinner and Awards Gala recognizing the achievements of civil rights activist and broadcaster Xernona Clayton and Miami Times Publisher-Emeritus Garth Reeves, the NNPA's oldest living publisher. The Temptations provided after-dinner entertainment.

NNPA 2011 National Convention, Chicago, IL, 6-23-11 (Day One) (24)

The National Newspaper Publishers Association, "The Black Press of America" held its annual convention in Chicago. Corporate sponsors of the convention include Ford, GM, AT&T, Nielsen, and Wells Fargo.

Events of the first day included a Press and Pulpit Breakfast with a challenging message from Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III, a multimedia platform workshop, a luncheon with a dynamic message from Rev. Marcia L. Dyson, and an advertising forum featuring panelists Donald A. Coleman of GlobalHue; Fay Ferguson of Burrell Communications; Chuck Morrison of Uniworld Group; Robert Brown of Carol H. Williams Advertising; Anita Laney of Professional Partnering Solutions; and D. Michelle Flowers Welch of Flowers Communications.

The day ended with the MillerCoors A. Phillip Randolph Messenger Awards Reception at the offices of the Chicago Defender and the NNPA Merit Awards Dinner honoring publishing and editorial excellence of NNPA member newspapers. Civil rights activist and broadcaster Xernona Clayton and actor Richard Roundtree hosted the event.

Exxxotica adult industry trade show, 5-26 to 5-29-11, Miami Beach, FL (67)

In May, the tenth annual EXXXOTICA Expo adult industry trade show at the Miami Beach Convention Center attracted a diverse crowd of more than 20,000 people – Black, White, Hispanic; young and old; singles, groups and couples; males and females; and saints and sinners – to the largest adult consumer event in the country. There was a wide range of seminars, stage shows, contests, exhibitors and adult performers.
