The Justice Department targeted Bonds to be the poster child for illegal drug use in sports and they will not let him rest in peace as long as the Bush Administration is in power.
I know the "official" charges are perjury and obstruction but the real charge is being a defiant Black man bringing down some of white America's most cherished sports icons. These sports icons like Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, et al, keep alive the deeply rooted sense of white superiority in all facets of human endeavor. Ali, Barry, Jim Brown, etc. threatened the white superiority myth and faced deep hidden and open hostility.
You may say that my thoughts are inconsistent with life in general and certainly with sports in modern America where everyone is "viewed as equal and judged on their achievements." I would simply ask you to recall that Jason Giambi, a proven and admitted user of banned sports drugs received no punishment by the government nor by Major League Baseball nor was he vilified by the media. If Mike Vick had been Peyton Manning do you really believe there would have been such a firestorm of righteous indignation across the country? If Nicole Simpson had been Black do you think the OJ trial would have split the country into two deeply emotional camps?? I think not.
